LDS-BSA Relationships Committees

Statement from the Scouting Handbook for Church Units in the United States (Revised May 2015)

2.4  LDS-BSA Relationships Committee

An LDS-BSA Relationships committee should be organized in each BSA local council to help maintain and strengthen working relationships between the Church and the BSA local council. An assigned Area Seventy chairs or designates a stake president to chair this committee, which includes a member of each stake presidency within the BSA local council. If designated, the stake president provides the Area Seventy with regular reports at coordinating council meetings or at other times. The BSA council Scout executive or his designee serves as an adviser to this committee.

Purpose of the Committee

The effort to establish LDS-BSA Relationships committees across the nation has increased the number of Boy Scouts of America (BSA) local councils working more effectively with local leadership from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) to deliver the quality Scouting program that LDS young men, adult leaders, and the surrounding communities deserve. When Area Seventies and stake presidencies serve on relationships committees, they are engaged and more aware of important local, regional, and national BSA issues and can therefore strengthen Scouting in the Church and the local community. The main goals of the committee are:

  • To maintain and strengthen working relationships between the Church and the BSA local council.
  • To collaborate with the BSA local council executive board, including key community, religious, business, and educational organizations.
  • Support the membership effort to reach out and invite all boys to join Scouting.
  • To provide counsel on policies, procedures, budgets, fundraising, calendars, and training.
  • To provide young men a quality Scouting experience, blessed with priesthood guidance and support.
